Red Turpentine Beetle Treatment

Treatment #1: Barrier Sprays of Bifenthrin

Step 1: Identify your pest

Find the beetle, which is small and red. The Red Turpentine Beetle leaves granola-like crystallized resin material around bases of pine trees.

Step 2: Buy appropriate material

ALWAYS READ PESTICIDE LABELS FROM FRONT TO BACK FOR ALL PERTINENT INFORMATION AND SAFTEY REQUIREMENTS. IT IS UNLAWFUL TO USE ANY PESTICIDE IN ANY WAY THAT IS NOT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE LABEL.

  • Baseline® (one quart makes 100 gallons of material)

Step 3: Timing

Provides 3-4 months of control of adults that make contact with treated areas of bark. Should be applied twice annually in spring and summer.

Step 4: Do no harm

LOOK FOR NEARBY FLOWERING PLANTS THAT COULD BE IN THE PATH OF MATERIAL DRIFT. THIS PRODUCT CAN BE HAZARDOUS TO HONEY BEES IF MATERIAL IS ALLOWED TO SETTLE ON FLOWERS OR OTHER BEE FORAGING SITES. AVOID TREATING THOSE TREES OR SET UP A BARRIER TO PROTECT NEARBY FLOWERS. If applied correctly, there is NO RISK TO BEES.

Step 5: Treat

Start at the ground and treat up to 5 feet above ground level. Make sure to get ALL the nooks and crannies as red turpentine beetle will crawl underneath bark flaps to get into the tree. Want a professional to take care of it? Contact us.

Treatment #2: Disrupting Pheromone Treatments of Verbenone

This is an environmentally friendly repellent that provides sustained and controlled release of the verbenone anti-aggregation pheromone. Verbenone is naturally produced by pine bark beetles and by several other species of bark beetle towards the end of a mass attack. The presence of verbenone signals new pine bark beetles approaching the infested tree that it is already too overcrowded to serve as a suitable host. By applying verbenone to a healthy and uninfested tree, host-seeking pine bark beetles will identify a tree as an undesirable host and leave it unharmed. Field studies have shown verbenone to be highly repellent of pine bark beetles on both single-tree and small stand levels. Verbenone is an outstanding alternative to standard pine bark beetles treatments, due to its high-level of control, long field life, and simple application methods. Want a professional to take care of it?
